Driver's Mechanical Awareness Seminar
4 to 6 hours of Instruction
 |
We can get tons of classes on
federal and state regulations, but hardly anything that teaches the
operator to become involved in the maintenance decision-making process.
The operator needs to know how to diagnose the mechanical health of the
piece of equipment they are operating. Early intervention can prevent a
routine maintenance item from becoming a safety event. |
"If a driver is not able
to recognize a pending failure, then every breakdown is a surprise and every
surprise a potential accident." ~ David Geaslin
The key to reducing vehicle
maintenance costs and avoiding safety problems is the Early Detection of
maintenance problems and the Early Intervention by the Maintenance
Department.
This seminar teaches operators and drivers how to become involved in the
maintenance of the machine they operate.
If they know how to create an excellent
write-up of the mechanical health of the piece of machinery at the end of the
shift, the Maintenance Department can repair, refurbish, or adjust the machine
to produce a quality product that will perform in a safe manner.
Of the multiple variables affecting the operation of a machine or truck, none is more
important than for the operator to be able to recognize a pending failure before it
occurs. If a part fails, it always damages the part next to it. If you can train
your operators to recognize a pending failure and get the problem fixed before it
fails, you can cut your parts and labor bills by up to 50% or more.

Mechanical Awareness Training |

Do your drivers know how to
recognize a cracked or broken spring?
When they can see one side
of the truck in one mirror and none in the other, do they know that is a
broken spring center-bolt and their steering axle is slipping back and
forth?
Do they know that the axle
can slip enough to lose control or blow
out a tire? |

"When the driver and operators become involved in the maintenance
of their equipment, maintenance costs drop dramatically."
The key to
reducing vehicle maintenance costs and avoiding safety problems is the
“Early Detection” of maintenance problems by the operators and
“Early
Intervention” by the Maintenance Department.
My Driver’s
Mechanical Awareness Training teaches operators and drivers how to become
involved in the maintenance of the vehicles and machines they operate. If
they know how to recognize a pending failure and create an excellent write-up at the end of the shift, the
Maintenance Department can repair the machine to produce a quality repair
that will perform in a safe manner.
Of the multiple
variables affecting the operational cost of a machine or truck, none is
more important than for the operator to be able to recognize a pending
failure early to dramatically improve reliability, costs, and safety.
Half of your
drivers and operators don’t know how to:
-
Read a
voltmeter (A $300 wrecker bill for a failure to start on the road)
-
Recognize the
importance of clutch free-play. (To triple the life of a $1,200 clutch)
-
Recognize a
steering problem’s importance (Any rubbing sounds means danger)
-
Avoid a
differential spin-out ($3,000 driver-induced problem)
-
Diagnose a
brake problem (Any brake problem is a downing discrepancy)
-
Cool down a
turbocharger (Triple the life of a $900 turbo)
-
Recognize a
low power condition (Avoiding a $1,500 injector pump change)
-
Recognize a
broken spring or spring center-bolt. (A safety issue)
This 4-hour
course teaches the driver how to recognize these significant cost and
safety issues and more. Let us demonstrate how this training will pay for
itself by the second break of the class. |

What your
drivers don’t know
that they don't know!
Most of your
drivers and operators are careful people. If they know something will
damage a truck, they usually won’t do it.
If they don’t
know what will happen to the truck if they do something, they won’t do
that either, because they don’t know what will happen.
It is when a
driver doesn’t know what he doesn’t know that you get the big maintenance
bills.
This course
teaches the drivers what they don’t know that they don’t know and it
usually pays for itself by the second class break when some driver
recognizes a mechanical condition that if not repaired would cost more
than the whole course.
We teach them
when it is best to shut down the truck and ask for help. It is a very good
course
These are
a few of the points we teach... |
 |
Do your drivers know that
starting, stopping, and accelerating in soft earth is the same as driving
up a hill and a different clutch technique is needed?
Do your drivers know that
shock failures to axles ($900) and drivelines ($2,000) can be
accurately diagnosed and they can be held responsible for thousands of
dollars worth of damage to their unit? |
 |
Do your drivers know
$3,000 differential spin-outs are caused by drivers and that they can
be held responsible for the damage?
When one wheel is stopped
and the other wheel is spinning in the mud and the speedometer says 50
mph, the differential spider gears are turning as if they were driving at
100 mph! The lubricants fail and “WHAM!”, $3,000 and a wrecker
bill. |
